AOC adds to Democrat headaches

She now has her own campaign arm to challenge her own party.

By David Kamioner | February 22, 2020

If Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of NY, AOC in political shorthand, is annoying to you, rest assured, she is ten times more to Nancy Pelosi and the Democrat establishment.

AOC just upped that irritation level by bypassing the DCCC, the official Democrat House campaign committee, and launching her own group to compete with it in primaries.

AOC’s group, naturally, will only support hard-left candidates. As Nancy and her ilk know that their last majority intake was chock full of actual Democrat moderates, this move by AOC must make her loathed without limit by DC Democrats. And there’s no fight like an intramural Bolshie fight.

Here’s AOC on the tussle: “Last election cycle, in the primary as we know, the turnout was quite low. This year, we want to multiply turnout by four times. That’s our goal. We want to secure 60,000 votes in the primary election. We need to start creating a turnout machine right now… It’s time to elect a progressive majority in Congress accountable to strong, grassroots movements that push support for issues like Medicare for All, a Green New Deal, racial justice, & more.”

Her group, “Courage to Change,” echoes her call on their website.

“Courage to Change seeks to reward challengers and incumbents who display political courage—people who refuse to bow to establishment pressure, who advocate ferociously for working-class families, and who have lived the same struggles as the people they seek to represent.”

Democrats notoriously hold grudges. The fallout from this blue-on-blue combat will wash over into the autumn, as many scores of Democrats will sit on their hands and refuse to vote for the fellow Democrats who beat them in the primary.

In close races, especially with Republicans surging with minority voters, an even slight decrease in Democrat turnout could turn a seat to the GOP. In her continuing role as an unintentional GOP mole, AOC is again helping to accomplish that goal.

Thanks, Ally. We owe you a drink. You can pour.
