If you want to run for the Democratic nomination for the presidency and you base your initial strategy on Super Tuesday, where there are lots of minority voters, there are some things you just can’t ever have said.
But Mike Bloomberg said them in a 2015 speech to the Aspen Institute regarding the controversial “stop and frisk” policing tactic in NYC while he was mayor, “Ninety-five percent of murders- murderers and murder victims fit one M.O. You can just take a description, Xerox it, and pass it out to all the cops. They are male, minorities, 16-25. That’s true in New York, that’s true in virtually every city (inaudible). And that’s where the real crime is.”
He then dug his hole deeper.

“So one of the unintended consequences is people say, ‘Oh my God, you are arresting kids for marijuana that are all minorities.’ Yes, that’s true. Why? Because we put all the cops in minority neighborhoods. Yes, that’s true. Why do we do it? Because that’s where all the crime is. And the way you get the guns out of the kids’ hands is to throw them up against the wall and frisk them… And then they start… ‘Oh I don’t want to get caught.’ So they don’t bring the gun. They still have a gun, but they leave it at home.”
When the president found out about this he immediately called Bloomberg a racist in a tweet, in all caps no less. But he thought better and had his campaign manager do the hit. Brad Parscale gleefully complied with further fun facts.

I’m not sure I’ve ever read a more boneheaded political statement. Regardless of the evidence yea or nay, politics is about perception and group loyalty. What do you think Bloomberg’s Democratic opponents are going to do with this? How do you think black voters will react?
I can virtually guarantee you the productions teams of Mike’s opponents have already written the scripts and are working on the spot. Hell, it may already be in post production. Many of them don’t like Bloomberg already because of his private sector wealth. This is a perfect set up for them.
You may hear from Cory Booker and/or Kamala Harris on this as well. You would hear from Deval Patrick on it. But nobody knows who he is.
So, pass the popcorn and let’s watch this unfold. It promises to be truly entertaining.
